72-Year-Old Man Graduates College, Proudly Celebrated by His 99-Year-Old Mom!

Amazingly, a 72-year-old man recently graduated from college more than 50 years after completing his high school. Completing Georgia Gwinnett College in Lawrenceville, Georgia, Sam Kaplan graduated first among his seven siblings to acquire a bachelor’s degree. Attending the graduation ceremony to support him was his proud 99-year-old mother.


Sam Kaplan began his career at a cleaning company then founded a telemarketing company. He also held jobs in customer service and as a cab driver. Hearing on the radio that Georgia Gwinnett College was providing a scriptwriting degree, at 68 he went back to school for the first time in decades.

For Sam, going back into a classroom after so many years was not easy. He felt anxious about fitting in with his far younger classmates and had to relearn how to study. He overcome these obstacles, nevertheless, by organising everyday tasks and socialising with his classmates. He made close bonds by spending time learning about the academic goals of his other pupils.


Teaching several of Sam’s seminars, Georgia Gwinnett College associate professor Kate Balsley acknowledged her satisfaction in his achievements. She said Sam would show images and anecdotes from his fascinating life and family. Although the collegiate community was happy he graduated, would miss his presence.
